Empowering charities with HR and workplace training
To celebrate our 10-year anniversary, Project Change Foundation has teamed up with Vancouver-based Pivot HR Services to provide a series of free, online training sessions to Canadian charities we have supported so far, as well as short-listed charities from recent years.
Led by Pivot’s founder and past PCF board member, Robin Turnill, seven PCF grant recipients and three short-listed organizations are attending four, two-hour online sessions packed with tips and strategies on HR best practices, giving feedback and managing crucial conversations, employment legislation, plus a session tailored for participants’ topics of interest.
“Implementing HR best practices helps organizations attract and retain talent, ensure compliance with legislation, and build a healthy, productive workplace culture – all of which directly support long-term sustainability,” says Turnill. “For charities, this is especially critical: with limited resources and high public accountability, clear HR frameworks help safeguard the mission, reduce risk, and ensure staff and volunteers are aligned, engaged, and supported in delivering meaningful impact.”
“Along with providing free access to training from experts, the sessions also give participants an opportunity to build their network with other Canadian charities and learn from each other’s knowledge and experience,” says PCF founder Joe Kelly.
Vancouver Food Runners’ executive director Michelle Reining says the series is delivering “immense value” to her charity.
“This support … [allows] our leadership team and program managers to build vital HR knowledge and skills that we otherwise wouldn’t have the resources to access. As we scale our impact of our food recovery organization, it’s crucial that we do so with intention – ensuring our internal culture, people practices, and leadership approach remain strong and aligned with our mission.”
This training program is a new endeavour for PCF and it’s our way of raising the bar in the suite of services we deliver to Canadian charities, to grow out made-in-Canada solutions to environmental and social challenges.
“By investing in effective people management, nonprofits can build resilient, mission-driven teams that are equipped to navigate change, reduce burnout, and increase impact in the communities they serve,” says Reining. “Project Change Foundation is providing a huge gift to the nonprofit sector through this program.”
