Patricia’s mentoring philosophy
Sometimes all it takes is a boost of confidence. That’s what Project Change Foundation board member, Patricia Bood, has learned in her time mentoring individuals and organizations.
“I find that people often know what they should do, but they benefit from talking it out or having it confirmed that they seem to be on the right path,” the lawyer and governance consultant, says.
Bood’s approach to mentorship is one of guidance, not directives.
“I have learned over time not to sound too definitive about my answer as I don’t have all of the context and [mentees] need to choose the best approach for them, which might not be what I would do.”
Along with her practical approach, Bood has plenty of inspirational words for young leaders to chew on:
“Make sure you are clear on the problem to be solved and not just trying to implement a new idea.”
“Emotions and perspectives are just as much a factor as facts and information.”
“Don’t worry about what others are doing. Use it is as a guide rather than a limit.”
“Focus on building and nurturing a strong personal and professional community. Surround yourself with interesting and positive people who want the best for you.”
As part of the Project Change Foundation board, Bood is looking forward to offering her knowledge and experience to emerging charities.
“The most rewarding aspect of being involved with PCF … is having a seat at the table to influence and watch the positive change that some great ideas and a bit of effort can accomplish,” Bood says.
“It also provides an opportunity to collaborate with people who bring different life experiences and perspectives. I am looking forward to engaging with the charities to hopefully add value and be inspired.”
